CHAPTER 13
The rehearsal dinner was a nightmare. According to Levi, at least. Gemma had patted him on the knee on the drive back to her place and told him heâd done a great job. He half expected her to give him a treat for being so obedient.
It was unfair to think that, but everything about the way sheâd approached him the last few days had been so . . . so platonic. Did she not remember that sheâd cried out his name barely a week ago? That heâd tasted her, that sheâd tasted him, that theyâd shared something, damn it.
It was possible that socializing had soured his mood.
Lacey had made a big production of him joining the wedding party. Heâd gritted his teeth, but smiled when Gemma elbowed him. Sheâd elbowed him again.
âStop,â sheâd hissed under her breath.
âYou wanted me to smile.â
âYeah, that was before I knew you were going to smile like a mass murderer.â
Heâd done his best to prove her right after that. Because he was pissed off that she was treating him so amiably. So politely. Not to mention that he couldnât believe he was in this situation. Chet had pulled him aside, thanked him profusely, promised to make it up to him, but it didnât really matter what Chet said. Levi was doing this for Gemma, and she didnât seem to care. Not even when he growled at Laceyâs mother, who peppered him with questions he didnât feel like answering.
How could she tell him he had done a great job?
Now he didnât know what came first. Was it the socializing that put him in this mood, or the way Gemma was treating him? Had he been a grouch at the rehearsal dinner because of Gemma, or was he being a grouch after because of the rehearsal dinner? It was confusing, and he fully expected Jude to descend and tell him to get a grip.
But of course, he hadnât seen Jude since before his flat had fallen through. Heâd gotten the deposit money back, as well as the first month of rent heâd been required to pay when heâd signed the contract. It had gone into the bank account Jude had created for him. It was the only money in the account, so he hoped whatever flat he found next was less than that. Especially since he was using some of it to help pay for Gemmaâs expenses.
Honestly, was anything going right on this mission?
âYou okay?â Gemma asked as they went inside the house.
She had thrown her handbag on the couch, and was now regarding him curiously, her hands in her back pockets. He followed the movement, noticing how tightly her jeans hugged her thighs. How she could only slip her fingers in and not her whole hand.
She probably had to jump to get those pants on.
He swallowed the moan. Stuffed the desire the image had exploding inside him into that handy little bottle. He could barely fit it in.
And why had he thought that?
âLevi.â
Now he was
